A Guide to Buying Ceiling Roses For Your Home

Ceiling roses are ornamentations traditionally made of plaster that are used to decorate the area surrounding a central ceiling light. They were standard fashion items throughout the Victorian and Edwardian eras, particularly among the upper classes where they were often used to complement a chandelier in a room with a high ceiling. Today, ceiling roses are made from a variety of materials including polymer-based products. This makes them much lighter than traditional plaster ceiling roses and therefore easier to install. Making ceiling roses from modern materials also gives a higher level of definition for those ceiling roses that are ornately decorated. Ceiling roses offer a focal point to a room and can be used to complement its contents. However, before you buy one there are a few things that you ought to consider that might influence your choice.

Firstly, you should consider the question - why you want to install a ceiling rose? Is it for entirely aesthetic reasons or is there a practical factor involved? Aesthetically, ceiling roses can add character to a room and help recapture the 'period feel' that a building can have. They may be used to accentuate the beauty of a chandelier and to highlight the lines of light it throws out. Alternatively, it may just be used to cover cracks in the ceiling! Ideally, you should install your rose in the centre of the ceiling and this will have some bearing on your choice as in the case of ceiling roses, size really does matter.

Initially, there is the size of the ceiling to take into account. If the rose is too large, it will simply dominate the room and serve to make it feel more 'closed in', rather than acting as a centrepiece. On the other hand if it is too small it will be a pointless exercise and the rose will become 'lost' in the expanse of ceiling. There is also the height of the ceiling to consider. A high ceiling will cheerfully show off a larger ceiling rose, whereas on a lower ceiling it will tend to dominate the room. The room's height may also affect the level of decoration you wish your ceiling rose to have. The higher the ceiling, the bigger and bolder the design you can expect to accommodate. The lower the ceiling, the finer the detail you can sport, although in modern houses it is generally better to opt for something plain as installing an ornate rose can often be a case of 'over-egging the pudding'.

There is also the question of existing decoration. Unless the room is being entirely redecorated, you may have to choose something that is sympathetic to its existing style. If you have intricately-patterned wallpaper you might want to minimise the amount of embellishment on your rose so that the overall design of the room does not become too 'fussy'. If there are existing cornices and coving then it is far better to select a design that blends in than one that will confuse the focus of the room. Detail is also a concern should you be planning to adorn the area surrounding a chandelier; the more ornate your chandelier is, the less your ceiling rose should be. In these instances ceiling roses are there to offset the lighting, not the other way round.

Using Ceiling Fans and Air Circulation Year Round to Lower Engery Consumption and Increase Comfort

If you own a home and are dealing with the aggravation of hot weather during the summer months and no heat during the winter months, you might want to look in to the quality of air circulation in your home. Many people do not realize that fans can only do so much to circulate the air in your home. Fans are a good thing because they do circulate the air in your home but you also have to think of the winter months when the heat is on. The best way to determine if you're getting the proper air circulation in your home Is to determine how much air is being circulated by the fans or ceiling fans in your home. The one thing that many people have to realize is that ceiling fans have a directional button built right into them so they you can switch the direction that the fan as turning depending on the time of year. A good rule of thumb is to have the fan push the hot air down in the winter, and pull the hot air up in the summer.

Ceiling fans come in very handy all round because they can help you spread the heat during the winter and during the cold air to the ceiling during the summer. Everybody knows that heat rises so in the summer you want the fan to suck up the cold air from the floor to circulate it all around the house. You can purchase any ceiling fan that you want because there are many different styles and sizes to fit anybody's needs and anybody's room. That is another thing that you have to consider when you are purchasing a ceiling fan because if you get a fan that this too small for the room it may not provide the circulation needed to ventilate the room.

Another thing that you could look into getting to circulate the air in your home is either an air conditioner or a central area unit. A central air unit is used to circulate the air in a larger home or industrial place of business because they can regulate the temperature in multiple rooms at one time. This is why you find many central air units alongside the houses they are cooling. These units are very productive because they do not use a lot of energy and can cool down your home in very little time.

If your home is not that big then you can get a window air conditioner. The window air conditioner cools down a small area and sits in the window of your home. These units do not cost a great deal of money and are energy efficient if you get the right model of air conditioner.

Ceiling Fan Direction - Warm or Cool?

Have you ever wondered which way your ceiling fan should rotate depending upon the season? You are not alone in this dilemma, as many people are not aware of the proper direction ceiling fan should rotate for the right job.

Most fans come with a ceiling fan direction of forward and reverse. When the ceiling fan direction is on forward, it will blow the air in a downward motion. When you stand beneath the fan, you will feel the breeze. When the ceiling fan direction is in reverse, it will blow the air upwards. If you stand beneath the fan, you will not feel any breeze.

The proper ceiling fan direction should be obvious. When you want to enjoy the cooling breezes, you will want your ceiling fan direction on the forward setting. This will circulate the cool air throughout the room to ensure your comfort. If you use your air conditioner in conjunction with a ceiling fan, you will enjoy the cool air without your air conditioner having to do all the work.

In the winter, with the ceiling fan direction on reverse, all the warm air that is trapped close to the ceiling will be sent down to the ground where you will need it most. This will ensure that no toes are affected by the cold. You can save lots of money on your heating bill when you reverse the ceiling fan direction in the winter. Think of the heat stuck up on the ceiling as money, and the ceiling fan direction in reverse can shower you and your family with plenty of dollar bills.

If you have a room with a staircase where the ceiling fan is located, you will want to do the opposite. For a ceiling fan direction in reverse in this case, you will want to send the cold air up and in the forward setting in winter to circulate the heat downward.

Read the instructions that come with your fan to ensure you are operating your ceiling fan direction the right way to enjoy the full benefits of your ceiling fan all year round.

Understand Ceiling Fan Ratings to Get the Best Fan

Ceiling fans now need a quality rating system check and public statement of that inspection. There are five sections to this QRS and each must be met the standards set by the government in order to be sold to the public. For each fan in the store, there is a public document stating that fan's QRS levels. The five sections tested are quality, CFM (cubic feet per minute) airflow, wind speed, efficiency, and watts of electricity used.

The quality rating measures from 1 to 5 with 5 being the best. It tests how well the fan was made, the noise level, the smoothness of the turn and the projected longevity. For this and more than any other section of the test, ceiling fans with a quality score of 4 or 5 are recommended.

CFM airflow measures how much air the fan can move in the room. There is a graph of the CFM airflow on the QRS sheet showing the levels while the fan is on high speed. This measurement is second only to quality in helping to make a ceiling fan choice. A CFM of 1400 or lower is the worst score where 10,000 CFM is the best possible. The range in CFM is due to the fact that not all rooms are the same size and a lower CFM is needed for a smaller room.

The wind speed is how well the fan will be able to cool off the room. This is done by a chill effect not the actual wind that moves. This measurement takes into account the CFM and blade span when calculated and figures out the wind velocity just beneath the fan. A large fan will create a larger column of air under the fan and therefore a lower wind speed causing the entire room to be cooled where a smaller fan will concentrate on the area beneath the fan.

The ceiling fan's efficiency is the CFM divided by the number of watts needed. This formula calculates the amount running the fan costs compared to the amount of comfort the fan affords the room. This rating is important but not nearly as important as the CFM simply because a good rating in efficiency will usually only save about a year whereas a good rating in CFM will save on heating and air conditioning costs year round. The better way to get more air flow is to have a higher powered engine. This quality test is measured for the amount of energy the fan pulls when set at the highest level. It is best to have lower watts rather than higher but, again, the more power, the better the airflow and thus the better the CFM. This is not a very important criterion as virtually all ceiling fans use very little electricity to run at high speed.

Fan Assisted Ovens - A Beginner's Guide

When you burn your finger you blow on it to cool it down so it is counter intuitive that putting a fan in an oven will make it hotter. This article is a beginner's guide to fan assisted ovens. It does not include product recommendations but should help you understand how these devices work and provide insight into whether they are right for you.

How it works

When you cook on a hob heat is transferred from an energy source (the flame if you are cooking with gas) via conduction. This means that the hobs gets hot which makes the pan get hot which in turn makes the food get hot. When you cook in an oven you are working in a different way. The heat source is actually warming the food by transferring energy to the air and it is the air which warms the food.

Warm air will naturally rise, this is known as convection. Conventional ovens rely on convection to move hot air around and keep a constant flow of heat going into food. The problem with this is that hot air will pool in the top of the cavity and end up heating the roof of the oven. This means that in order for the whole of the oven to be filled with hot air you first need to pre-heat the metal sides in order to stop them from soaking the energy out of the air.

A fan-assisted oven (which is confusingly also known as a convection oven) forces air from the heat source directly into the centre of the cooking space so that anything placed there gets hot. Energy is still transferred from the air to the walls but because the fan is constantly forcing hot air in and around the cavity it maintains a steady temperature.

What this means

1. Fan assisted ovens do not need preheating - Because the fan forces hot air directly into the cooking area a fan assisted oven either takes no, or very little, time to preheat.

2. Fan assisted units provide even cooking - As both hot and cold air are pushed around the cavity the difference between the warmest and coldest places is reduced.

3. Fan assisted cooking is quicker - Because they transfer energy more efficiently than regular machines they give the same results at a lower temperature and in less time. This is can be useful but it is also the reason why so many people end up burning their food when using a fan assisted oven.
